Wildlife
The island’s expansive protected beaches, wet lands and unique habitats provide thriving environments of rare birds, wildlife and sea life. Piping Plovers are one of the endangered species often seen on our paddles followed by Great Blue Heron, Snowy Egrets, Osprey, Red Tail Hawks, Terns, many gulls and more.
Fish
The island is a world renowned fishing location, famous for Bluefish, Striped Bass, Albacore, Bonita and King Mackerel. Many of our trips, especially the Cape Pogue Adventure, offer an opportunity for trawling a fishing line behind your kayak and the chance to catch dinner.
Phosphorescence
Our sunset champagne and hors duerves paddle returns under the stars and brilliant night sky amongst one of our most beautiful phenomenon, Phosphorescence. This is a bioluminescent organism especially brilliant in the late summer and early fall, illuminating the path of your kayak with glowing sparkles in the water.
Shellfish
Our paddles will float us over the shellfish beds and rocky inlets home to the islands many delicacies such as Oysters, Quahogs, Scallops, Little Necks, and Lobster! You will have the opportunity to sample many of our island’s fare, especially our highly desired Quahog chowder, as part of your farewell Menemsha clambake dinner.
The Towns
Each of our five towns have their own history and character. The island was originally inhabited by the Wampanoag Native American Tribe. Tribal lands and cultural activities are still a vibrant part of the island’s culture, especially in Aquinnah, where most of the tribal members reside. In the 19th century the island was a prominent force in the whaling industry, still evident in the architecture and charm of Edgartown. Widows walks top large sea captain homes bordering Edgartown’s historic harbor and lighthouse. Oak Bluffs is home to what was originally a methodist colony of tents, now a brightly colored village of gingerbread homes and host to the Annual fireworks display. Menemsha is a picturesque fishing village and backdrop to many of the scenes in the movie Jaws. West Tisbury is known for its outdoor summer markets offering local organic produce and flowers and hosting the annual Agricultural Fair. Home of the Steamship Authority, Tisbury is the island’s most year round town, offering plentiful shopping, BYOB restaurants and the Tisbury Street Fair.
